The Truth about Clinton Rd...

It’s that time of the semester where you past the halfway mark, but you’re not quite at the end. Teachers start to talk about Final Projects. And us students begin to grow weary because all we want is for the semester to be over. Or at least that’s how I feel. April 12th – the day when my final project in Television Production II is due. I am working on a 6- 10 minute segment based on the infamous Clinton Road, located in West Milford, New Jersey. My production team and I have spent some time already on this project, including devoting our spring break to going on shoots. But enough on the project itself, let me talk about the actual location.

Clinton Road is a 10 mile road off of Route 23 and home to many myths and legends. It is an attraction to many fans of WEIRDNJ, who drive down this dark road at around midnight in hopes of running into a ghost or being chased off the road by a mysterious black pick up truck.
The most popular stories that seem to be known by locals are based on Dead Man’s Curve and KKK activity in the woods.

Dead Man’s Curve is this little bridge about a little more than halfway down the road. Many years ago, supposedly a young boy got hit by a car and fell into the lake and drowned. Many people have claimed to have seen his ghost, dwelling under the bridge. The story is if a visitor were to go to the bridge at around midnight and throw a coin over their shoulder into the water, the coin will be thrown back to you by the ghost. Child toys also have been known to wash up in that area in the lake.

KKK activity is another popular legend in the area. The beginning of the road has a white home, which many say members of the KKK live there. Supposedly, the KKK continues to conduct rituals deep inside the woods and if anyone spies on them, they chase you off the road. In the 1980s, Kross Kastle home to many of the KKK rituals was knocked down, but the remains are still there. It takes a 10 minute walk into the woods to reach this area.

My production team and I decided to travel this road during the day and at night. During the day we traveled on foot to many locations, including the 10 minute walk to Kross Kastle. What we found was a flat cement surface and many crumbled bricks with moss growing on them. At night we explored the story of the little boy under the bridge. We threw the coin over our shoulder, but NOTHING, not a thing happened. Then the biggest mood killer of all came, when a man patrolling the area said that the water under the bridge was part of a reservoir and that all those stories aren’t real. The road isn’t haunted and all the stories are just myths.

But are they really JUST myths? We were able to interview many visitors to the road, who have witnessed some strange activity. We personally didn’t see anything out of the ordinary, but others have actually had coins thrown back at them, chased off the road by black pick up trucks, and seen what they believe was a little boy that just vanished. So is Clinton Road really haunted? The only thing I can truly say is - follow your own intuition.
